The Great Pumpkin Hunt

Join the Fernie Nordic Society for Fernie's 2nd Great Pumpkin Hunt! Children 9 years and under (you don't need to be a Fernie Nordic Member, but having it already will let you bypass the waiver line!!) are invited to scour the forests surrounding the Warming Hut at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (see map) for their own pumpkin. When the search is finished, kids can enjoy hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows by the bonfires. It promises to be a great morning of autumn fun!
A minimum donation of $5 per pumpkin hunter is requested and includes hot chocolate and marshmallows.
This is an outdoor event, so please dress your children appropriately and bring camping chairs or blankets if desired. We're tough Fernie folks so a little rain (or snow!) won't deter us - but if the weather turns really gnarly, we may postpone until October 29th - check our Facebook page the day of for an update.
Last year many families chose to bring wienies to roast on the bonfires and enjoyed a walk on the trails around the Warming Hut after the Hunt. Please plan to do this again!
The Fernie Nordic Society thanks Ann's - Your Independent Grocer for supporting this great annual event! We also thank Columbia Power for their generous support.

Our 2nd Annual Great Pumpkin Hunt is planned for Saturday October 22, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near the Mt. Fernie Provincial Park.

Community Fun Race

Update Jan 22:  The results of the race are here

The Fernie Nordic Society is holding its Annual Community Fun Race at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre on a Sunday by mid-season. Our fifth edition of this event in January 2016 was a great success. Everyone is welcome, club members and non-members alike, to participate in this popular event. We want to make it a fun event for young skiers as well as older ones. Our volunteers are organizing the event and the participation fees are kept low $5 (kids) and $10 (adults) for FNS members and $15 for non-members .

It is really a community event. Come to ski, come to race, or come to cheer! Compete against your friends and enjoy the great trails. There are several categories to choose from, short ones for the young skiers and longer distances for the older kids and adults and even a 'team' category with an adult pulling a chariot and a passenger! The keyword here is FUN, so wear a funny hat or costume if you dare!

The 6th Annual Community Fun Race will be held on Sunday January 22, 2017 at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near the Mt Fernie Provincial Park. Registration for the event is done online only through the Webscorer.com website (click link to register). The race fee is due on the morning of the race (cash only) at pickup of the number plate between 9:30 am and 10:30 am.

Kootenay Cup Races

winterfest

UPDATE    The event is cancelled due to adverse road conditions in the region and within Fernie

The race #4 will be held on Saturday February 11th, 2017 at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre, near Fernie, BC.

Following the previous success in the 2016 winter, the Fernie Nordic Society will be hosting the Teck Kootenay Cup race event again in Fernie. This race is the fourth of five nordic ski races organized in the Kootenays area.

Race participants from all areas are welcome to participate. Participants from local clubs under the CCBC organization earn points for their club toward the Kootenay Cup which will be awarded at the end of the season. Our club, the Fernie Nordic Society, has won the Cup in the last two seasons due to great participation by our member skiers. There is a challenge in here for other clubs.

See more details of the race in the official Race Notice (click link to open) : race categories, schedule and suggested local accommodations.

This season, the Tears and Gears organization has joined the Fernie Nordic Society for the Fernie Winterfest weekend of February 11 and 12, 2017. The Fernie Winterfest combines the Teck Kootenay Cup race with their own Winter Wheezer Run/Ski/Fat Bike race event for a full weekend of sports. Both events are open to skiers of all ages and a small discount will apply to participants to both events.
A Full Moon Ski & Social event will be held on Saturday evening at the clubhouse of the Fernie Golf & Country Club starting at 6 pm. There will be beef on a bun and poutine as well as snacks, a cash bar and door prizes. Tickets may be purchased at the time of registration to the races on the Zone4.ca website, or purchased separately through EventBrite.

The 2nd annual Fernie Pumpkin Hunt
, , ,

What fun! Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2nd Fernie Pumpkin Hunt on Saturday morning at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. By 10:45 am, the hunt was on. Many volunteers had hidden 275 pumpkins, more than double than last year! We even had to go for a last-minute run to replenish the pumpkins after the first 200 were claimed at 11:20 am! Thanks to those who waited for round 2 to get hidden. We'll aim for 400 pumpkins next year!

We believed that no pumpkin were harmed abandoned in the woods. The forest was well searched. The hunt was followed by marshmallows by the fire pits as well as hot chocolate and coffee for the participants. The photo booth proved very popular with the pumpkin hunters.

To all volunteers, pumpkin hiders, pumpkin transporters, Emily Park Photography, Starbucks and Ann's independent - thank you! Finally, Mother Nature, we owe you one. Thanks for pulling through! We also wish to thank Columbis Power for their generous support of this community event.
