  • Grooming Report by Dave Kurschenska Monday February 4th, 2008
Groomed the track from 08:45 to 12:00 the fuel tank and Jerry can are full. I ran the drum around the track without the track setter and widened the track out. I then set the track to the right side leaving the shop to the right all the way. Skate skiing is great, nice and wide and classic also. I helped the boys at the yard put the Ginzo in the shop. Just a reminder when using the drum try to stay at 11 to 12 KMs and the track sets pretty good , not as good as the ginzo machine. Todd will email us when the Ginzo is running again.

    Golf Course, Dike, Rodeo Grounds

  • Wednesday, December 19, 2007   Fernie Golf Course Open.
Most of the trails on the Golf Course have been groomed and tracked for skating and classic. They were getting snowed in quickly but we'll try to keep them groomed. Please don't ski off the groomed trails. The reason the golf course allows us to ski there is that they hope skiers will remain on the grooming and stay off the more sensitive parts of the course. Thet dike has been groomed and tracked from Maiden Lake to the railroad crossing. Some of the Rodeo grounds have also been groomed, though a 4X4 truck was seen driving down the tracks soon after I finished.

  • Monday, December 17 - Doug groomed the dike adjacent to the Rodeo Grounds for skating and classic. He groomed some of the trails on the Rodeo Grounds for classic only.
Tuesday, December 18 - Ray is supposed to set the first track on the golf course and Doug will groom some more--should be set for skating and classic by tomorrow afternoon, barring unforseen circumstances.
FAR - No groomed trails yet, but the skiing is pretty good with total coverage on the Silk Trail 5 km loop
Coal Creek - As of 2 days ago, still lots of rocks

  • 2007/2008     Grooming Schedule

  • March 30,2007 - Introduction to Community Coaching Clinic (Sponsored by Fernie's East Kootenay Community Credit Union):
This is a last call for volunteers to attend the CCC/CCBC/ICC Clinic. The dates for the CCC/CCBC Introductory to Community Coaching Clinic will be March 30 and 31. The clinic will be held here in Fernie. If you plan to attend but have not yet confirmed this please contact Megan Walsh at your earliest convenience at: 423-7212, walsh.megan@gmail.com and THANKS to everyone for participating.

  • March 21,2007 - Grooming:
The golf course and rodeo grounds have been closed for the season. The trails at Island Lake Lodge are still being groomed and are still in great shape. The trails at Fernie Alpine Resort are in good shape except for that BIG hill at the parking lot. You might want to walk that one unless we get a lot more snow—dirt is showing at the bottom.

  • Saturday March 15,2007 - The Fernie Nordic Society would like to announce that we will not be doing any more grooming this season due to a breakin at the maintenance garage at the golf course and our snowmobile Big Blue was stolen. The snowmobile was recovered after a RCMP chase and members of the Nordic Society. We finally located the snowmobile in the barn on Blackstone property with some damage. Come to the St. Patrick's Day and we'll tell you the story.

  • Saturday March 10,2007 Golf Course Closed to Skiing, Snowshoeing until further notice. Rodeo grounds are still open but very soft. Backcountry trail is also very soft and hard to ski.

  • Saturday March 10,2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke
My adventure to Island Lake Lodge. The snow was soft but was groomed however the snowmobilers managed to take out the classic tracks when ever they could. I realy enjoyed my trip and here are some photos. I almost made it to the Old Growth Forest.

Golf Course was groomed by Doug March 8th but it is realy soft in places. If you Ski it you will notice where Doug got stuck quite a few times. If we get some snow and it cools then we will have good skiing at the golf course again.

  • Sunday March 4, 2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke Fernie Golf Course: The Golf course is in good shape. Still a realy good base and easy, fast spring skiing. The Backcountry trail was good but snow was soft and I broke through the base quite offten, but still lots of fun.

  • Saturday March 3,2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke
Doug was out and groomed the Golf Course (classic & skating) , Rodeo Grounds (classic) and the Backcountry trail (classic double lane). Great job Doug, I enjoyed every bit of it. Photos show my journey along North 40 to Rodeo Grounds (Jimcana), then out on the Backcountry Trail, returning on along Ray's Way and finally The Way back to the Club House. What a amazing day!

  • Friday March 2, 2007 Fernie Nordic Society enters float in Griz Day Parade It was fun and a party atmosphere at the Fernie Griz Day Parade. The Fernie Nordic Society float was stuck in the middle of two rocking floats Backcountry and NonStopSkiing and couldn't help making our groomers rock and roll. Everyone seemed to enjoy our presents. On the float is Bill Armstrong, Barbara and Len Kosiec, Jo Anne Burke. Patrick Burke was driving through the crouds downtown Fernie.

The Backcountry 5km trail is located along the dyke side of the golf course and goes North along the river. For those that are directionally challanged like myself in Fernie it is away from the Hwy3 Bridge. Happy Skiing. Again, thanks to Doug and Ray for the new trail.

  • Wednesday February 21,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: Fernie Golf Course: (Ray groomed this moring and Todd groomed and widened the Skating Track this afternoon) Snows back with about 20cm of Fresh and conditions are really good for both Classic and Skating.

  • Saturday & Sunday Febuary 17,18,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: Fernie Golf Course:(Doug groomed Saturday, Todd groomed on Sunday.) The snow on the golf course is getting a little thin, so check the website for possible closures if we see a lot more melting in town.
Island Lake Lodge: The trails at Island Lake Lodge are still in great shape. You can ski the lower loops if you don’t want to do the big climb up to the lodge; the lower loops are suitable for novice skiers. If you want to have lunch at the lodge, you need to make reservations a day in advance.
Coal Creek Canyon: The snowmobile club is grooming the road up Coal Creek Valley and down to Morrissey every Thursday evening. It is just corduroy—no classic tracks—but should be great for skating if you go EARLY on Friday mornings before too many snowmobiles get there.

  • Tuesday Febuary 13th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: The golf course, rodeo grounds and the dike to Maiden Lake were all groomed for classic and skating on Tuesday. The classic track is a little shallow and chunky, but the ice ruts are ground up. The skating on the golf course is fast and smooth, probably the best we've had all year.

  • Sunday Febuary 11th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: The Ginzu Groomer groomed today. Skating and classic trails are in really good shape thanks to the Ice Munching Ginzu Groomer. Photo Opp Ginzu Groomer and Big Blue. Also here is some photos of today's Island lake lodge tour.

    Kids day out!

  • Thursday Febuary 1st,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: The golf course is in pretty good shape for classic skiing It still pretty hard. but the dusting of snow last night should smooth it out considerably. Our new ice renovating machine shipped today so it should be in action soon. Check out our new trails on the rodeo grounds. To get to the new trails from the Golf Course trails, just follow the new trail leading from the Golf Course to the dike. Turn Left on the dike and ski along the dike until you see a new trails to the left. One can also drive towards the Golf Course Maintenance shop and park at the rodeo grounds entrance. Several loops have been groomed for classic skiing and the snow is much softer than over on the golf course. This should add about 5 km of trails to our currently groomed system including a couple of HILLS! Thanks to the hard work of Heiko Soucher, Todd Fyfe, Dave Misura, Frank Palski and Doug Werme and Cheryl Stomps, we have a nice little trail through the woods too, although it may still be a little bit rough. We have also groomed the dike from the bridge and Maiden Lake to the rodeo grounds. The trails are in good shape right now and allow one to access the system from the parking lots near Maiden Lake. Remember, access to these private lands are only available to Nordic Skiers that have our insurance (Day Pass or Memberships), skiers must sign in at the golf course box, also sign in sheets help us in our fund raising, so if you start your ski from Maiden Lake, stop by the clubhouse and sign in. Also walkers and dogs are not allowed on the trails and we ask everyone to remind people of that, in case they forgot or did not read the signs. Dogs are allowed on the City groomed dyke trails. Snowshoers please keep to the skating track and keep on the Nordic trails.

  • Saturday January 27th,2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke: The classic trails on the golf course were quite good even though it was icy. The trails were busy with classic skiers. I didn't see anyone skate skiing as it was icy but it did not look in too bad of shape. Everyone that I met on the trails today really enjoyed the day on the Nordic trails.
    Hope you enjoy the photos.

  • Thursday January 25th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: No grooming recently because of the thaw and freeze. The classic trails are really good. The skating was great in a few places where the sun softened the ice, but mostly it was awful. Yellowstone Track Systems called to say they hope to ship the Ginzu groomer January 30th.

  • Wednesday January 24th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: Skating at the Golf Course is really icy right now but the classic tracks are really good thanks to Doug. The parking lot is particularly hazardous so be careful waking around!! The latest word on our ice munching grooming equipment is that it will be shipped on January 30, so we should have it pretty soon after that.

  • Tuesday January 23rd,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: In because of the thaw I groomed the trails for skating and classic. They are in good shape but might get pretty crunchy if we get a real freeze. The Ginzu groomer is scheduled to ship January 30.

  • Monday January 22th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: I went to clean the trails up a bit and found the wind had filled a lot of the tracks. I groomed the whole thing for classic and skating and conditions are superb, though the classic track may get filled up with windblown again.

  • Sunday January 21th,2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke: Classic and skating trails were groomed by Ray Bryant and Doug Werme on Jan 19th, 20th, 21st: Trails are in really good shape after a few feet of powder. We worked hard to keep trails at the Fernie Golf Course with good classic and skating tracks. Trails at Island Lake are just getting up and running and the Multiuse Coal Creek trail was not groomed Thursday but we think it will be groomed by today.
Great skiing after a big dump of powder at Fernie Golf Course! Great skiing after a big dump of powder at Fernie Golf Course!

  • Wednesday January 17th,2007 Trail Report by Doug Werme: The classic track is in very good condition and the little dusting of snow we've received from time to time has been just right to smooth out the track. The trails have not been groomed since the recent cold spell set in. The skating lane is icy and pretty rough but the equipment we have right now can't grind up the crust. We'll have a renovator in a few weeks which should improve our grooming capabilities considerably.
This is a good time to try some waxable skis. The cold mature snow is easy to wax for, and any type of XC kick wax rated for -3 or colder will work well. In conditions like these, a waxable ski can give both better kick and glide and ice up is not a problem.
Island Lake Lodge has groomed many of their roads, and the skiing is wonderful. The road is plowed to their parking lot and a road directly in front of the lot is groomed for skating and classic skiing. The Island Lake roads are definitely the best bet for skating at the moment, and Fernie Nordic Society passes are valid on their trails.
Great day at Island Lake! Great day at Island Lake! Great day at Island Lake!

  • Friday January 12th,2007 Trail Report by Patrick Burke: Classic and skating trails were groomed by Ray Bryant a few days ago. Trails are in good shape with the deep freeze. We are working on bringing on more trails towards the end of January so stay in tune. Part of our trail system is the multipurpose trails up Coal Creek but you will have to share as it is also a Snowmobile trail.
