Great spring day for the Flying Vikings!
The Fernie Nordic Society held its last skiing event of the season on Sunday March 24 at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre. Mother Nature granted us a beautiful spring day for the occasion.
Participants in costume skied the course in large numbers. A group of 57 skiers took up the challenge of going 25 or 50 km on the trails of the Nordic Centre and the Fernie Alpine Resort. In addition thirteen Mini-Vikings completed the shorter courses. Food, beverages and coaster or cookie medals were waiting for finishers back at the Nordic Centre. Other prizes included one for best costume. One participant did complete the 25 km course on his wooden skis! Good for you, Thomas!
It was a record number of participants for our fifth edition of the event. Our first edition in 2018 attracted just 11 participants!
Thank you to the groomers and the many volunteers who prepared the course, patrolled it and planned the event.
Check out the results below:

New ski gear for our young skiers
Our club is working on getting new gear to replace the rental gear used by the kids in the Skill Development Program. Some of the gear is already ten years old. Here is another opportunity to help the club.
First the club is starting a fundraiser through Nordiq Canada toward this goal. And locally, The Guide’s Hut right here in Fernie has donated $2,000 worth of ski equipment with some additional amount related to the sales during February.
The Guide’s Hut
Supporting local businesses is supporting your community!!
The Guide’s Hut has so graciously donated $2,000 worth of junior nordic ski equipment to the children & youth’s programming junior rental fleet! Additionally, they will be donating a portion of the total sales of Nordic equipment sold in February up to a total of $2,000.
