Nothing yet but there may be something to go with the last gasp of the winter fairy.

The Great Pumpkin Hunt

Join the Fernie Nordic Society for Fernie's 5th Great Pumpkin Hunt, our annual autumn fundraiser event! Children 9 years and under (you don't need to be a Fernie Nordic Member, but having it already will let you bypass the waiver line!!) are invited to scour the forests surrounding the Warming Hut at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre (see map) for their own pumpkin. When the search is finished, each pumpkin hunter can enjoy hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows by the bonfires. It promises to be a great morning of autumn fun!

7th Annual Community Fun Race

EVENT RESULTS

The results of the Fernie Community Fun Race are now available at Webscorer.com HERE

The Fernie Nordic Society is holding its 7th Annual Community Fun Race day on Sunday February 17 - please note the new date. The event starts at 10:30 am from the warming hut of the Nordic Centre. All skiers are invited to participate, club members and non-members alike. The overall theme will be FUN and CHEERS for all. Although this event has a four letter word in its name, the Nordic Society wishes to welcome all participants of all abilities to the event, not just ‘racers’.

A short ski course will be used for two types of events: one event for a duo adult/child (10 and under) and the second one is a 4-person relay with skiers drawn at random. Another option is for the 4 legs of the relay to be done solo by the same skier.

Skiers should register online before race day at Webscorer.com although late comers will also be accepted on Sunday morning

There will be hot food available by donation – bring a bowl and a mug to help us go green(er).

EVENT TERMINATED

This two day event was successful with the help of the many volunteers and sponsors of the event. Participants aged from 4 to 74 took part. Most skiers were from Kimberkey and Fernie with some outside help from Missoula, Crowsnest Pass and Scotland! A total of 59 skiers participated in the first day in the free technique (skate) event. The event included a special speed trap on the 700 metre long Runt trail to test for the fastest female and male skiers. Sydney Wilson of Kimberley Nordic was the fastest woman on this climb and Mac Dressler from Fernie was the winner on the men side.

On the second day, the classic race had 48 participants. The weather was excellent with some fresh snow on Sunday morning. The volunteer grooming team did an awesome job on the trails after a week of poor and wet weather. Many more volunteers peppered the course with signage, set up the stadium area and handled the distribution of the hot drinks and the delicious food from Infinitea T-Bar and Boutique of Fernie. Many local skiers climbed on the podium as winners of a Teck medal or a shiny wooden medal. Photos of the weekend action to come shortly.

Many took on the challenge of the Fernie Birkie

Again this year, the Fernie Birkie was held under some beautiful weather. The event got underway at 9:50 am and all skiers were back at 3:06 pm. Thirty-three participants - two from Calgary and all others from Fernie - took part in this challenge. Six of them skied the entire 50 km with an extra 12 lbs in their pack. The young Wes Robinson Shaw completed the 50 km in the Lite category. Others skied 25 km either solo or as part of a team. Prizes, medals and cheers waited for them at the end of the challenge. Wes won the best costume award for his furry outfit topped with an impressive set of antlers.
